Boston, MA – Mitch and Ginger Walsh are big fans of Elf on the Shelf. “Our kids behave so well during the Christmas season,” said Ginger. “The fear of having their actions reported back to Santa creates little angels.”
When asked if they celebrate any religious traditions at Christmas, the couple denied it. Mitch explained, “No. We are atheists. God is simply something humans made up to make people act a certain way as a means of control and domination. Do this. Don’t do this. Touch this. Don’t touch that…silly taboos. Even worse, we think it is dangerous and abusive to teach children such things. Teaching a god who gives rewards and punishments is manipulative and simply leads to restrictions of freedom and fear.”
With the extra time gained from avoiding live Nativity displays and church services, the parents plan to spend much of the holiday season in the school principal’s office complaining about the introduction of CCTV, because it spies on their children and invades their privacy. They also plan to complain about other children telling their son and daughter the meaning of Immanuel, and the materialistic capitalism promoted by the classroom gift exchange.
