Asheville, NC — New member to the small group, Suzie Thomas, was extremely uncomfortable with the open prayer time in her church’s Thirtysomething Small Group.  “It was so awkward,” she reported.  “After voicing prayers, they just sat there for a good 30 minutes without saying anything.  No one would end it.  It was so stressful.  I didn’t know what to do.  Why couldn’t they have gone around the circle?”

Meg Barton, a longtime member of the group, laughed when we asked her about Suzie’s reaction:  “Oh, Suzie doesn’t have young children.  We just sit there after praying for a while, because we love the peace and quiet.  No one asks for anything, yells our names, cries, or touches us.  My husband usually takes a nap during our quiet time.”

When Meg explained the circumstances to Suzie, she said, “That makes so much more sense.  I was wondering why some of them were rubbing on essential lavender oil and drinking chamomile tea.”
